Dogs cannot brush their own teeth. This may seem like stating the obvious, but there are a huge number of dogs out there with severe dental disease that desperately need treatment. Most owners are unaware of their dogs teeth problem until either a vet checks the dogs mouth, or the mouth becomes so sore and breath so foul that the owners attention is drawn to it.

The Collie is a wonderful family dog. They come in two varieties, smooth coated and rough coated. They are generally good with kids and other animals and love their adopted family. The most famous Collie is Lassie. They may not be suitable for an apartment as they need room to exercise. A properly fenced in yard would be ideal.

The Clumber Spaniel is an intelligent, calm dog great for apartments as they do not need a great deal of exercise as adults. They are good natured and easy going and will get along with children, other dogs and other pets if raised with them.

The Dalmatian is an energetic dog that was bred to run. She will not do well in an apartment unless the owner is a jogger or person able to allow her several long, hard walks a day. A properly fenced in backyard with a place to stay warm in winter and access to the house and human companionship is ideal. Or, since she seems to love horses, another ideal environment might be a horse farm. She may not do well with younger children due to her high activity and she may play too hard and nip. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog. She can do well with other pets as long as she is socialized early with them. They may do poorly with other dogs or other dogs of the same sex.

The Doberman Pinscher can live in an apartment but will need frequent vigorous exercise or she may become hyper. A properly fenced in yard, suburban area or farm is best. She is not an outside dog in cold climates as she is cold sensitive. She should be extensively socialized as a puppy or she may become over protective. She makes a fine natural watch dog and guard dog. She is highly intelligent and trains easily. She can tolerate older children but be careful. The Dachshund is good with older children as long as she has been socialized with them. She may not do well with cats and other pets as she was originally bred to hunt. She likes to be indoors and does not like harsh climates. She needs to be exercised regularly to avoid gaining weight as this can be hard on her back.
